Director for International Relations with Latin America at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center BSC
Dr. Ulises Cortés got his degree in Enginering at the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey ITESM in 1982 and his PhD at the Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña in 1984; and has been a working in academics for over 25 years.
Dr. Cortés is currently the Director for International Relations with Latin America at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center BSC, where he engages with a network of international experts in the field of artificial intelligence. His current focus in research projects is on several areas of artificial intelligence in computer science, including knowledge acquisition and concept formation in knowledge-based systems, machine learning and autonomous intelligent agents. Dr. Cortés has made a significant contribution to the application of computer science to areas of health and neurophysiology, including the development of assistive technologies to support the elderly and people with disabilities. In the last 5 years has collaborated with colleagues on trials evaluating: the self-management program C-MMD, which aims to support people living with dementia and their caregivers; and technologies to enhance the detection and prevention of falls among the elderly, including the i-walker, a robotic servo-assistive device to enhance balance with subacute stroke.
In 2004, he was awarded Advanced Research Accreditation by Agencia per a la Qualitat del Sistema Universitari de Catalunya. He has a career total of 54 journal publications and has presented over 150 papers at international conferences and workshops. In 2012, Dr. Cortés was appointed as a member, level III, of the Mexican Sistema Nacional de Investigadores SNI. In 2015,
Dr. Cortés was appointed correspondent member of the Mexican Academy of Computation (AMEXCOMP). He is also the co-founder of numerous scientific workshops, including: agents applied in health care (9 editions); binding environmental sciences and artificial intelligence (8 editions); Bayesian and causal networks, from inference to data mining (2 editions); and Jornadas de Cooperación CONTACyT-Catalunya. He is the Co-Editor in Chief of the Journal Computación y Sistemas and Research on Computing Science. He has also been a guest editor for special issues in several international journals including: AiCommunications; Journal of Computer-aided and Civil Engineering; Computacion y Sistemas; Environmental Modelling and Software; Applied Intelligence; The International Journal of Artificial Intelligence; Neural Networks, Complex Problem-Solving Technologies, and the International Journal of Approximate Reasoning.
