Where to Find New and Used Bookstores in Playa del Carmen

Book lovers will be happy to know that Playa del Carmen has a few bookstores that cater to those who love to read. Nothing beats a relaxing day at the beach, sitting in the shade with a paperback novel in your hand.

This shop is located on the ground floor of Calle Corazon shopping mall, which is underneath the Thompson hotel. It’s just off 5th avenue, between 12th street and 14th street.

Books in Spanish make up the majority of the store’s stock, but they do have three bookshelves of English language material to choose from. The majority of them are fiction literature, with major English-language authors represented and some translations of foreign authors as well. The inventory changes over time, but there are several authors who’s back catalogue is always can almost always be found: Margaret Atwood, Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, Charles Dickens, Philip K. Dick, Stephen King, and George Orwell.

They also have some beautiful hardcover collections of short story and novels, such as the collected works of H.G Lovecraft, Edgar Allan Poe, Anne Rice, Arthur’s Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes short stories, and the collected writing’s of Nicholas Tesla. Mixed among these are some non-fiction books, including some biographies, politics, interior design and travel. There is also a small children’s section with comic books and coloring books.

The majority of the store contains books in Spanish, so if you are shopping for a Spanish-speaking friend or relative, then you are in luck. There is a large selection of literature from the best authors in history, past and present. Latin American authors in particular are well represented, such as Gabriel Gárcia Marquez and Octavio Paz. The back of the store is dedicated to art, culture, history, language, travel and children’s books.

Quinta Cavalieri

This shop is located on 1era Sur, at the corner of 60th Avenue, across from the entrance to Parque la Ceiba. It’s two blocks on the west side of the highway and 1 block from Juarez Avenue, so it’s easy to get to form downtown. Quinta Cavalieri is a used bookstore, with a constantly shifting stock of reading material new and old, and is a great place is for trade-ins and exchanges, offering a 2 for 1 deal on paperbacks and hardcovers. The prices are quite cheap, with many paperbacks selling for as little as 10 pesos, and large hard covers costing 30 pesos.

The store’s English language selection is quite good, taking up an entire wall of bookshelves. The have many fiction and non-fiction books, including literature, self help, spiritual and historical books. Quinta Cavalieri has separate sections for Spanish, French, and German language books as well, and every year they have special deals around Christmas when everything is discounted. The shop is open all day Monday to Friday, but only open a half day on Saturday.
