The Rivera Maya has been known for its natural wonders and laid back attitude rather than a world class golf destination. That has all changed in the past couple of years, and it is now standing shoulder to shoulder with the Cabo San Lucas courses.
With this year’s Myokoba Golf classic in Playa Del Carmen continuing to bring many golf legends to town, international attention to the area from golf aficionados, players, and spectators is reaching new heights. Historically, golf in Mexico has been played on private courses located near larger city centers such as Mexico City, where the first golf club opened in 1905. Tourism was responsible for bringing golf courses to the Pacific Coast and the Baja Peninsula over the past 25 years. Now the Riviera is part of the growth. The Caribbean east coast offers another unique coast line. As construction technology has evolved, the challenge to build courses in the limestone terrain, marshy landscape, jungle foliage, salt water intrusion, have been able to be overcome. The courses of Riviera are continually drawing more people here at new records.
