Playa del Carmen markets begin to reopen

Four of the city’s 11 itinerant markets in the municipality of Solidaridad have reopened at a 30 percent capacity. The reopening announcement was made by mayor Laura Beristain Navarrete who says all mobile market vendors are in compliance with health protocols and the epidemiological traffic light.

The Secretary for Economic Development, Amanda Degyves Carral, reported that the gradual and safe reopening of trade is slowly being regenerated by agreement between municipal authorities, the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris), tianguis leaders and their guild members. She says after several weeks of preparation with exhibitors, the decisive step of reopening was finally taken.

“We are taking care of every detail in the return to the New Normal. We follow all protocols and have a schedule of the progressive reopening of the itinerant markets. We are aware of the needs of people to maintain their sources of income and to support their homes, but we must guarantee everyone’s health and safety first,” said Degyves Carral.

Playa del Carmen’s Playa de mi Esperanza, the main itinerant market in the municipality, reopened under strict sanitary measures. During the reopening, 20 vendors participated and drew a crowd of nearly 200 within the first five hours. The market is monitored by inspectors from the secretaría de Desarrollo Económico, Turístico y Atracción de Inversiones.
