U.S. Men’s National Team Notes CONCACAF Gold Cup Final USA-Mexico June 24, 2011

According to the Us Soccer sight:After splitting the last two CONCACAF Gold Cup titles, the U.S. and Mexico face off for a third consecutive final with both a berth to the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup and bragging rights at stake. On Saturday, June 25, the CONCACAF Gold Cup final returns to Southern California for the first time in nine years and the U.S. and Mexico take the field against one another in Southern California for the first time in almost 11 years. For the U.S., it marks the fourth consecutive appearance in the final – a CONCACAF record. Kickoff at the Rose Bowl is slated for 6 p.m. local (9 p.m. ET) and the match will be televised live on FOX Soccer and Univision

  • All U.S. players except Jozy Altidore are available for selection on Saturday.
  • Altidore suffered a hamstring strain against Jamaica in the quarterfinals that will keep him out four to six weeks.
  • No U.S. players face disciplinary sanctions leading into the final. The U.S. made it through the quarterfinal and semifinal picking up only two yellow cards, one by Jermaine Jones against Jamaica and one by Carlos Bocanegra against Panama.
  • Mexico is the only CONCACAF team that has beaten the U.S. in the knockout round of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, beating the U.S. in the 1991, 1998 and 2009 tournaments. Brazil eliminated the U.S. two times in the semifinals and Colombia eliminated the U.S. in penalties in the quarterfinals of the 2000 event.
  • The shutout by the U.S. in the semifinals was the third in a row, the most since the U.S. reeled off six consecutive clean sheets from June 8 to Sept. 10, 2008.
  • Clarence Goodson has started five consecutive matches, the most consecutive starts in his international career. Previously he started the three games prior to the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
  • Alejandro Bedoya played 90 minutes in the semifinal, the first time he has gone the distance in his 12 U.S. appearances.
  • Jermaine Jones scored his first international goal for the U.S. against Jamaica.
  • Bedoya and Sacha Kljestan made their first starts of the Gold Cup against Jamaica and reprised their roles against Panama in the semifinal.
