Swimming with Turtles in Akumal: Do’s and Dont’s
If you are in Playa del Carmen you must definitely visit Akumal Beach! This beautiful town is just a short drive from Playa del Carmen and is the hometown for hundreds of sea turtles. The access to Akumal is still free and you can enjoy this place as long as you follow certain rules:
Do bring your snorkel!
It’s safe to swim and explore this area. You will see turtles and other fantastic sea creatures!
Do hire a guide!
You will learn a lot more if a professional guides you through the reef. It’s not very expensive!
Don’t touch anything!
This is a very fragile ecosystem specially the reefs and the turtles. You don’t want to bother these beautiful animals, we must take care of them!
Don’t use common sunscreen!
The chemicals can hurt this environment. Biodegradable sunscreen is acceptable!
