Playa del Carmen Mayor Closes Beaches, Increases Police Presence, Restricts Taxis

In response to the recommendations of the federal and state governments, the closure of beaches has been instructed at the request of the municipal president Laura Beristain.

Elements of the Directorate of the Federal Terrestrial Maritime Zone (Zofemat) in coordination with the Ministry of Civil Protection carried out the closure in compliance with the social distancing measure.

“In this government we are absolutely responsible for the health and safety of the citizenry, that is why I issued instructions for compliance with this measure,” said municipal president Laura Beristain.

Marco Loeza, head of the Zofemat, indicated that staff in his charge will continue to make tours of the beaches to urge citizens and visitors to stay in their homes as the health contingency passes. The closure of Playa del Carmen beaches comes after numerous other beaches in Cancun, Isla Mujeres and Riviera Maya had made official beach closure announcements the week before.

Along with the closure of beaches, the Ministry of Public Security and Transit of Solidaridad maintains prevention and surveillance patrols in the streets of Playa del Carmen and Puerto Aventuras. Commander Jorge Robles, head of the Ministry of Public Security of Solidaridad, instructed police to continue with walking tours, patrols and stationary surveillance in self-service stores, convenience stores, plazas, shopping areas, neighborhoods and subdivisions.

In addition beaches will remain closed during the contingency and filters at the entrance to the city from Puerto Morelos, Tulum and Mérida will continue where sanitary security modules have been implemented for those who transit by road.

Beristain Navarrete also revealed that as of Monday April 6, only 20 percent of the taxi fleet will be permitted to circulate as a result of the current health emergency. “We do not want any disease issues, so we must reduce the number of taxis on the streets,” she said.
