Sports events in Cozumel
Cozumel Island, which is just a ferry trip away from Playa del Carmen, will host a series of international sports events including swimming, cycling, fishing, golf and triathlon. These competitions will be between August and November 2016, thousands of participants are expected to sign in the events making Cozumel the sports island of Mexico.
The first event will be the Oceanman, to take place on August 7 at the Golondrina Island. This competition will have over 500 swimmers for 10km, 5.5km and a 1.5km contests. Cozumel is the only place in the continent for this competition previously held in Europe.
Juan Emmanuel Gonzalez, tourism director, thinks that the crown jewel for this series will be the Triathlon World Cup. It’s expected to receive around 5,000 participants from over 100 countries including Olympic athletes. Mexico has hosted this event two times before in 1995 and 2002.
