On Monday, officials and volunteers around the state began the task of door-to-door food distribution to those in need. The government has announced 500,000 food baskets as part of their Food Aid Program, set for delivery to help lessen the struggle while employees remain at home and out of work.

Governor Carlos Joaquín explained that staying home will allow the health contingency caused by COVID-19 to be overcome more quickly. He, together with municipal heads from Benito Juárez (Cancun), Puerto Morels, Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, among others, set the food drive in motion. Hundreds of volunteers participated in the food drive meant to help ease the financial burden caused by the global pandemic.

“Our task today is to take care of ourselves…and with this program, the family economy is supported in the 11 municipalities,” said Carols Joaquin.

He highlighted the work and support of the Ministry of National Defense, the Secretary of the Navy, the National Guard, Quintana Roo Police and presidents of the 11 municipalities, helping people who need it most.

He said in addition to food, he continues to work to protect employee jobs through employers with more than 1,100 companies having joined to maintain jobs based on a solidarity pact.

Carlos Joaquín has asked residents for patience as they go house-to-house delivering the food baskets, which he notes, will take between 15 and 20 days to complete.

In Benito Juárez, food aid will be delivered to 250,000 families. In Puerto Morelos 12,000. In Solidaridad (Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras), 60,000 are planned for families that need it most. In Cozumel, 20,000 families. In Lázaro Cárdenas, 6,000 families will receive food baskets at their front door.

In Tulum, approximately 9,800 families will be supported, while in Othón P. Blanco, 20,000 food baskets will be distributed over the next few days. Dozens of other cities and towns around the state are also being included in the Food Aid Program who will likely begin to receive the baskets next week.
