If you are in Playa del Carmen the first thing to do is to try one of the delicious marquesitas!
This is a traditional snack from the south, salty and sweet at the same time you can also taste a part of the extensive culinary history of Mexico. The origin of this treat goes back to the 40’s, in a local ice cream shop named Helados Polito nearby a school named Colegio Americano attended by the sons and grandsons of a wealthy Marquis, therefore MARQUESITAS.
This dessert is elaborated with shredded Bola or Edam cheese and other fillings like chocolate or fruit jam. The toppings are put on a hot crepe and then rolled into a cone. The result is a very affordable, convenient and tasty snack.
Nowadays you can find marquesitas everywhere in the Rivera Maya usually sold on the street for around 25 pesos and you get to see how your marquesita is done… there is some art and a lot of love in the process.
So, have you tried marquesitas already? I’m sure going to get one later today.
